NetSuite for Enterprises: Features and Setup Guide for Multi-Entity Companies

By Louis Balla, Chief Revenue Officer, Nuage. Updated October 2026.

NetSuite runs financials, inventory, CRM and commerce in one account, so a sales order becomes an invoice in the same system that holds the customer and the ledger. For multi-entity companies, OneWorld adds subsidiaries, intercompany and consolidated reporting. Oracle’s setup order is to plan the hierarchy, set up currencies and tax jurisdictions, then create subsidiaries from the root down.

This guide covers what is in the platform, the service tiers that cap users and transaction volume, and how a multi-entity account is set up.

What do the NetSuite enterprise terms mean?

A short glossary, using Oracle’s definitions where they exist:

  • OneWorld. The edition capability that lets you manage data for a hierarchy of separate legal entities, or subsidiaries, across financials, customers, commerce, services resource planning, business intelligence, and tax and compliance.
  • Subsidiary. A legal entity in the hierarchy. You create them from the root subsidiary down through children and grandchildren.
  • Elimination subsidiary. A subsidiary record used when consolidating, so intercompany activity can be eliminated.
  • Nexus. A tax jurisdiction that subsidiaries use for tax purposes, set up with related tax items.
  • Intercompany. Transactions between your own subsidiaries, such as purchases and sales across entities.
  • Multi-Book Accounting. Multiple sets of accounting records based on a single set of real-time transactions, available only in OneWorld.

What does NetSuite Enterprise mean, and which service tier fits?

Enterprise is the name of one NetSuite service tier. The other three are Standard, Premium and Ultimate. Each tier sets a maximum number of users, file storage and monthly transaction lines. Oracle’s service tier structure is:

Service tier Users File storage Monthly transaction lines SuiteCloud Plus licenses
Standard Up to 100 Up to 100 GB Up to 200K Up to 1
Premium Up to 1,000 Up to 1,000 GB Up to 2M Up to 3
Enterprise Up to 2,000 Up to 2,000 GB Up to 10M Up to 6
Ultimate Up to 4,000 Up to 4,000 GB Up to 50M Up to 12

Oracle counts transaction lines as the total per month across all transaction types, averaged over the most recent six months. If you exceed a limit, administrators see a banner message and get an email with instructions. File storage has a 90-day grace period, which you can use to reduce storage or discuss a tier change with your account manager. The tiers also set concurrency for web services transactions and the number of processors for scheduled scripts through SuiteCloud Plus licenses.

To test fit for a large or multi-entity company, pull your monthly transaction line count and user count, see which tier they land in, and ask your account manager which tier your contract carries.

How does NetSuite unify financials, inventory, CRM and ecommerce?

They run as one cloud suite in a single account. Oracle’s OneWorld guide covers financials, customers, commerce and business intelligence for a multicompany business in one place. Three examples from Oracle’s documentation show how the pieces meet:

Oracle also says that in OneWorld you can add fields to item records so that several subsidiaries share the items, and inventory setup is a step in the setup list below.

How do you set up NetSuite OneWorld for multiple subsidiaries?

Oracle’s setup page gives the order:

  1. Plan the hierarchy. Draw the subsidiary structure first, including elimination subsidiaries.
  2. Set up currencies. Configure the currencies subsidiaries will use and their exchange rates.
  3. Set up tax jurisdictions. Configure the nexuses subsidiaries will use, and the related tax items.
  4. Create the subsidiary records. Start with the root subsidiary and work down. Create legal entities and elimination subsidiaries, edit nexuses and set preferences.
  5. Finish the account setup. Oracle then lists account setup in OneWorld, Automated Intercompany Management, payroll setup, inventory setup, multiple vendors setup, associating subsidiaries with entities and items, controlling employee access to subsidiaries, and locking transactions by subsidiary.

Two details from the later steps affect design. Customers and vendors can have a primary subsidiary and multiple secondary subsidiaries, while employees and partners can have only one, according to Oracle’s page on associating subsidiaries with entities and items. And after a transaction is posted for an entity, you can’t change the primary subsidiary on that entity record, so settle the assignment before go-live.

What does each subsidiary need?

Item What to decide Source
Currency Which currencies the entity transacts in, and the exchange rates Oracle OneWorld setup
Nexus and tax items Which tax jurisdictions apply Oracle OneWorld setup
Elimination handling An elimination subsidiary and Automated Intercompany Management Oracle intercompany overview
Entities and items Primary and secondary subsidiary for customers and vendors; which items are shared Oracle subsidiary association page
User access Which roles see which subsidiaries Oracle role page
Period locks Whether the entity can close separately Oracle period-locking page

How do intercompany, roles and period locks work?

Oracle says Automated Intercompany Management lets you manage intercompany transactions and automatically generate elimination journal entries, and that NetSuite evaluates the activity in your intercompany accounts during period close and creates the eliminating entries.

For access, an employee sees only the subsidiary on the employee record by default. An administrator edits the role to select more subsidiaries, as described in Oracle’s page on controlling employee access to subsidiaries. A role option, Allow Cross-Subsidiary Record Viewing, extends what users can see.

For the close, Oracle says you can lock accounting periods at the subsidiary level. When a period is locked for a subsidiary, users cannot enter transactions for it in that period, unless they hold the Override Period Restrictions permission.

How do you plan global expansion in NetSuite?

A new country means repeating the setup order for one more entity: its currency and exchange rate, its tax jurisdiction and tax items, a subsidiary record under the right parent, the customers, vendors and items it will use, and the roles that can see it. Because a posted transaction fixes the primary subsidiary on an entity, decide the structure before the first transaction. A scoping case from this year shows how that planning starts.

When a project-based technology services firm decided to move to a multi-subsidiary structure, our customer success manager worked with the NetSuite account team to confirm the license position, set up a scoping call to estimate the work, and then brought the client’s finance staff into the design, because the company hierarchy affected invoicing at different levels and more besides. The work was in design as of September 2026.

What tools extend NetSuite for a larger company?

Oracle’s SuiteCloud Platform summary lists point-and-click customization, SuiteFlow workflows, SuiteScript, the SuiteCloud Development Framework, SuiteTalk web services for integrations and SuiteApps. Oracle states that customizations made on the platform migrate with every NetSuite upgrade, and it makes a Release Preview account available twice a year, right before each release, for testing business processes. Our guide to NetSuite customization support covers what to ask a provider.

Integrations need governance as the account grows. In at least 5 of the 15 accounts we assessed in 2026, integration passwords, tokens or keys were stored in ordinary custom text fields instead of NetSuite’s masked password field type. In one account, 12 custom fields on live integration setup records held credentials this way, none of its 4,378 custom fields used the masked type, and one of the 12 was set to show in list views. The fix we recommend is converting each field to the masked type and narrowing who can see the records.

How Nuage approaches enterprise setup

For multi-entity accounts, our team recommends these steps. The order changes with each account.

  1. Confirm what the contract includes. Licensing for subsidiaries is confirmed with the NetSuite account team before design work.
  2. Scope the work in a call. The call produces an estimate based on the number of entities and the changes to existing records.
  3. Bring finance into the design. The hierarchy affects invoicing, reporting and access.
  4. Set up in Oracle’s order. Currencies, nexuses, subsidiaries, then the account settings.
  5. Review access and integrations. Roles by entity and where integration credentials are stored.

Nuage’s NetSuite experts do this work as part of ongoing NetSuite optimization and managed services. Our implementation guide covers the wider project.

NetSuite for enterprises FAQ

How does NetSuite unify financials, inventory, CRM and ecommerce?

It keeps them in one account. Oracle’s OneWorld guide covers financials, customers, commerce and business intelligence together, and its documentation shows an approved sales order converting to an invoice, with CRM quotas and forecasts tracked by subsidiary. Inventory setup is one of the steps Oracle lists when you set up OneWorld.

What is NetSuite OneWorld?

OneWorld is the capability that lets you manage a hierarchy of separate legal entities, or subsidiaries, in one NetSuite account. Oracle documents consolidated reporting, intercompany features, ERP accounting, CRM and linking of subsidiaries to websites. Multi-Book Accounting is available only in OneWorld. A large company also needs a service tier that fits its users and monthly transaction lines, and Oracle’s highest tier, Ultimate, allows up to 4,000 users and 50 million lines.

How do you set up subsidiaries in NetSuite?

Plan the hierarchy, set up currencies and exchange rates, set up nexuses and tax items, and then create subsidiary records from the root down. Oracle then lists account setup, intercompany, payroll, inventory, vendor, entity and item association, employee access and period-lock settings. Confirm primary subsidiaries before posting, because they cannot change afterward.

How do you plan global expansion in NetSuite?

Treat each new country as one more entity. Set up its currency, tax jurisdiction and subsidiary record, assign its customers, vendors and items, and review which roles can see it. Confirm your license position and service tier with your account manager first, since a global group adds users and transaction lines, and test the first close in sandbox before it goes live.

Can NetSuite be customized for a large company?

Yes. Oracle documents point-and-click customization, workflows, SuiteScript and web services, and says platform customizations migrate with each upgrade. Larger accounts need a named owner for scripts, a plan for testing in Release Preview each release, and a masked field type for storing integration credentials.
