NetSuite automates parts of the financial close natively: recurring journal entries, bank feeds and reconciliation matching, intercompany elimination, and Intelligent Close Manager and Exception Management for tracking the close and flagging unusual transactions. Standardize the close checklist and chart of accounts first, then automate recurring entries and standard reconciliations, then add exception review.
This guide covers which close tasks NetSuite automates and the order to automate them in, with the checks to run before you rely on each one. For the close checklist itself, see our NetSuite month-end close guide.
Does NetSuite automate the financial close process?
Yes, in parts. The table lists common manual close steps, the NetSuite feature that automates each one and what to check before you rely on it. The Oracle Help Center pages for Intelligent Close Manager and Exception Management describe the two close-specific features.
| Manual close step | NetSuite feature | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Re-keying the same journal entry each month | Memorized transactions, set to post on schedule or to remind | Amounts that vary each period, and who reviews before posting |
| Downloading bank statements and matching line by line | Bank Feeds SuiteApp or Auto Bank Statement Import, with reconciliation matching rules | Feed status each month, and ownership of old unmatched items |
| Eliminating intercompany balances by hand | Intercompany Reconciliation report, then intercompany elimination from the Period Close Checklist | That transaction pairs match before elimination runs |
| Tracking close tasks in email or a spreadsheet | Intelligent Close Manager portlet | That the feature is enabled and the primary accounting book is the one you close |
| Reviewing every transaction for errors | Exception Management | That it is available for your account (Oracle says it is not yet available to all customers), that the history is long enough for the model and that someone reviews each exception |
| Chasing approvals by email | Approval workflows built in SuiteFlow, or SuiteApprovals | That the routing is live and matches policy |
Why do manual close processes break down at scale?
A close that worked with two entities and a handful of accounts becomes hard to finish on time at ten entities with multi-currency transactions and intercompany balances. Reconciliation errors in one entity then carry into consolidation, and the team covers the gap with overtime.
What does a spreadsheet-driven close cost?
Beyond the extra hours, spreadsheet-dependent closes take time from variance analysis, forecasting support and advice to the business, the work senior accountants are hired for. Manual reconciliations introduce mistakes that need rework during review, which extends the close, and each correction cycle adds risk when external auditors start flagging inconsistencies between subledgers and the general ledger. Board reporting then goes out late.
What does the close maturity gap look like in NetSuite?
Some companies running NetSuite use only part of its close tooling. They have the basics, such as period close checklists and lock controls, and still run reconciliations, consolidations and variance analysis offline. A team at the lowest level uses NetSuite for posting and manages the close by email and spreadsheet. The next level adds saved searches and task checklists with reconciliation still done by hand, and the highest level automates subledger reconciliation, reviews by exception and reports during the period.
How does financial close automation work inside NetSuite?
Financial close automation in NetSuite is a mix of native features, workflow configuration and integration. The goal is to remove routine work so the team spends its time on items that need judgment.
Automating journal entries and bank reconciliation
The highest-impact targets are recurring journal entries and account reconciliations, because they take the most time and carry the most error risk. Oracle’s memorized transactions let you set up recurring entries that either post automatically or remind you to post them.
For bank work, a food producer’s NetSuite administrator described her reconciliation this way: “We currently match bank data and reconcile the manual way by downloading the bank statement PDF and match it up line by line.” For her and for an equipment dealer, our team compared the bank-feed connection with a scheduled statement import over SFTP, then set up the daily feed for the dealer in a live session and showed the controller how to renew the bank’s multi-factor login at month end so the connection stays up. Oracle’s documentation describes both options: the Bank Feeds SuiteApp transfers bank data from supported institutions into NetSuite, and the Auto Bank Statement Import SuiteApp imports statement files every day over SFTP.
How Exception Management flags transactions for review
Oracle states that Exception Management is not yet available to all customers and depends on transaction history. Where it is available, it learns from your last 18 months of transaction activity, reviews transactions created or edited in the past hour, and creates exceptions when activity looks out of pattern. It does not change transactions; a person opens each exception and resolves it or marks it as needing no action. The review queue holds transactions with an unusual amount or account, changes to vendor information and expected transactions that have not been entered, so the controller’s time goes to the items that need a decision.
Between May and September 2026, our team turned on NetSuite’s close-management and exception-management features for three clients. Each started in sandbox, with the controller’s role given the new permissions and a walkthrough of how the feature changes the period-close checklist, before anyone switched it on in production. The exception feature learns from production transaction history, so we told one client to expect a modeling period before any exceptions showed up for review.
Close automation and management reporting
How do close automation and NetSuite dashboards connect?
Dashboards built on the ledger show current numbers once period-end entries post on schedule. For organizations with multiple subsidiaries, Oracle documents that intercompany elimination journal entries are generated from the Period Close Checklist, which removes the hand-built consolidation workbook.
What should controllers automate first?
Automate in phases, starting with the highest-impact, lowest-risk processes:
- Recurring journal entries and standard reconciliations. They repeat every period and rarely need judgment.
- Exception-based review for intercompany and balance sheet accounts. Add this once the first step is stable.
- Advanced capabilities such as continuous close or AI-driven anomaly detection. Add these only after the foundations hold.
Before automating anything, audit your chart of accounts and close checklist for consistency. If account structures vary across entities or close steps are not standardized, automation will repeat those inconsistencies every period.
How Nuage approaches financial close automation
On client accounts, our team works in roughly this order. The order changes with each account.
- Map the close as it runs today. We list each task, who does it, which system it runs in and how long the client says it takes.
- Fix the foundations. We check the chart of accounts, period locks and bank feed status before adding anything.
- Automate the repeat entries and bank work first. Recurring entries become memorized transactions, and manual statement downloads become a feed or a scheduled import.
- Turn on close tools in sandbox. Intelligent Close Manager and Exception Management start in sandbox, with the controller’s role given the permissions and a walkthrough of how the checklist changes.
- Review after the first live close. We look at which exceptions were useful, which thresholds need adjusting and what the team still does by hand.
Nuage’s NetSuite experts do this work as part of NetSuite optimization and managed services. Recurring close problems often start with the reports, so our guide to why NetSuite reports don’t match lists the first checks. Automation that removes manual entries also supports your controls, which our SOX compliance guide covers. To see where your close stands, request the free NetSuite Performance Scorecard or schedule a call with a NetSuite expert.
Frequently asked questions about NetSuite financial close automation
Does NetSuite automate the financial close process?
Yes, in parts. NetSuite offers memorized transactions for recurring entries, bank feeds and reconciliation matching, intercompany elimination on the Period Close Checklist, Intelligent Close Manager for tracking tasks and exceptions, and Exception Management for flagging unusual transactions. A person still reviews and resolves the exceptions, and the setup determines how much of your close these features cover.
What is NetSuite Next, and does it change financial close automation?
Oracle announced NetSuite Next on October 7, 2025 as a version of NetSuite with conversational intelligence, agentic workflows and natural-language search. Timing and availability for your account are a question for your NetSuite account team. The close features documented in the Help Center today include Intelligent Close Manager and Exception Management, and our team has turned both on for clients, so you can plan your close around those now.
What is the best close automation software native to NetSuite?
The native options are the Period Close Checklist, bank reconciliation with feeds and matching rules, memorized transactions, Intelligent Close Manager and Exception Management. Whether they are enough depends on your transaction volume, entity count and review process. Start with the native features when requirements are straightforward, and consider an add-on when you need deeper matching or workflow.
Which financial close software integrates with NetSuite and posts journal entries directly?
Close platforms commonly post to NetSuite through its APIs or a file import. Whichever you choose, test the posting in sandbox, give the integration its own role with only the permissions it needs, and keep an approval step before posted entries affect the ledger. Ask the vendor how failed or partial loads are reported, because they cause reconciliation differences.
How can we automate close tasks without losing control or segregation of duties?
Use role-based permissions, approval routing and clear preparer and reviewer assignments, so automation does the routine work and a person authorizes material postings. Document who owns each control in a simple matrix, and test the controls during the first two or three closes after go-live to confirm they work as designed.
